Pa. gov. prefers lease plan

The governor of Pennsylvania still hopes to lease the Pennsylvania Turnpike, even though the plan has few supporters in the state legislature, The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa., reported. Gov. Ed Rendell has not received a bid to lease the 359-mile turnpike, but he thinks such a deal could bring more revenue than a parallel plan, called Act 44 passed by the legislature in July, to add tollbooths to 1-80 through the state. Backers of Act 44 figure it could produce $750 million in a year by adding tollbooths to 1-80 and raising toll prices on the turnpike beginning in 2009.
