It's all happening at the Zoo

The massive Zoo Interchange on the west side of Milwaukee is getting a facelift. A major exit off the interstate highway system to the city zoo and surrounding area for more than 50 years, the Zoo Interchange forms the junction of 1-94,1-894 and U.S. Highway 45. In 1963, it was one of the first interstate highway projects in Wisconsin-and now it's one of the state's busiest, with 350,000 vehicles negotiating it each day. When the current Zoo Interchange began showing its age and inefficiency, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation launched a plan to reconstruct the aging infrastructure. Its condition had deteriorated, the obsolete right- and left-exit design of the roadway and bridges had become dangerous, and current and future capacity needs were not being met.
