By 1920, the demand for Henry Ford's Model-T exceeded capacity at the Highland Park factory. Ford wanted to shift production to the River Rouge facility where raw materials and finished products could be transported by lake freighters, rail and truck. To meet that demand, the existing Fort Street swing bridge, along with a few others on the river, would be replaced to open up the channel. The double-leaf bascule Fort Street replacement bridge opened for traffic in 1922 and carried four lanes of vehicular traffic while integrating two trolley lines within the roadway and sidewalks on each side of the bridge.
