Local Government News: ROAD ASSET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - A POINT OF VIEW TO ACHIEVE NATIONAL UNIFORMITY

There has been much discussion lately around Australia about Asset Management Systems (AMS) in terms of their role in Local Government. Practitioners have been addressing some quite fundamental questions such as: 1. What purpose they should serve? 2. What systems should be used? and 3. How they should be implemented? There is a wide range of different approaches being considered on establishing AMS and I have noticed that across the country there is little consistency about key issues like: 1. Which data is collected? 2. What form of data collection should be promulgated? 3. How data is analysed, and 4. What outputs should be produced? This diversity is unlikely to be in the national interest of Local Government. The purpose of this article is to highlight the issues and influence and encourage decision makers to work together to establish a more uniform approach to AMS to ensure greater benefits are obtained from limited resources in the management of the extensive local road network across Australia.
