摘要

Since 1972 blocks of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) have been used as a lightweight fill material for road construction purposes in Norway. Later a variety of applications have been added for Civil Engineering purposes in general and there is a marked increase in the use of such applications on a global scale. Geofoam blocks have become a competitive lightweight fill material in constructing roads and railways or other structures on steep slopes or on soft ground in order to solve bearing capacity, horizontal pressure and settlement problems. Other applications relate to seismic hazards, protecting structures from rockfall hazards etc. Research into the properties and applications of the material has been undertaken in an umber of countries.
