Arthur C. Upton: Let The Evidence Speak

Arthur Upton has never been afraid to face controversy. Throughout his more than half-century distinguished career, he has tackled many tough and complicated issues head on, relying on his belief in scientific principles to discern truths and provide clarity to some of the most important risk debates of the late 20th century. Art's interest in the field of risk arose from his early childhood in Ann Arbor, MI. Art's mother Ellen Canfield Upton developed pneumonia, a disease that was nearly always fatal in the 1930s. His family fully expected her to die. Art recalls that the doctor came to his house repeatedly with a little black bag and administered a new drug (a sul-fonamide) to treat his mother. As the young Art watched the dedicated physician save his mother, he knew that "that's what (he) wanted to do." Following in the path inspired by the family doctor, Art studied premed at the University of Michigan. During the Second World War, he was accepted into medical school in an accelerated program called the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP).
