Somewhere between the paintings of L S Lowry and the models built by the maniacal matchstick hobbyists of the 1970s, com.es a simple yet revolutionary construction innovation: houses made of metal sticks. Except these sticks are actually 1mm thick rolled steel frames. This is not the new Meccano. It is the latest in low impact, high efficiency construction at the government's environmental flagship, Greenwich Millennium Village (Building study, page 30). Architect Proctor and Matthews is completing the second phase of the project, which champions environmentally friendly innovation. One of its successes is the on-site prefabrication of lightweight metal frames for structural walls.
