Martin Henchion had to start from scratch when he returned to Dublin after six years in Germany. All he had was the name of his Irish-German practice Henchion-Reuter. An exhibition of his work made a splash and helped win him three public buildings from the city corporation. The first to finish is a muscular new sports centre in Cabra, just north of Dublin. Set in the constituency of Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, the centre is surrounded by 1950s semis - many of them originally council houses - and five football pitches in a well-used park. Active local sports groups secured funding from Dublin City Council to build an indoor sports hall and changing rooms; the council added a few community spaces and there was the brief.
