Toyo Ito of Japan received the Royal Gold Medal at a glittering ceremony at the RIBA's London hq last month. The same evening, international fellowships were given to Shigeru Ban of Japan, Peter Eisenman of the US, Massimiliano Fuksas of Italy, Wolf Prix of Austria, and Bernard Tschumi and Rafael Vinoly of the US. These are wonderful evenings when the RIBA stands astride the world stage of architecture, honouring the very best architects in the world who, in their turn, are happy to be recognised by us.
