Jef Smith is used to designing on tight urban sites after years working at Jestico + Whiles. So in his new berth at London-based architects' collective Meld, there was an unusual and slightly scary freedom in being faced with a greenfield site and open-minded clients - none other than Smith himself and his partner Vicky Thornton, who designed it for themselves.
