The environment in which professionals practise these days is increasingly complicated by the weight of regulation and legislation. The construction industry has been particularly affected by this trend. The more experienced practitioners will no doubt remember, perhaps with a twinge of nostalgia, when Building Regulations were dealt with by a publication no larger than a small paperback, when designers did not need to worry overly about health and safety during construction and when designs could be simplified by woefully neglecting the needs of the disabled. Change has been, in most instances, for the good but it has nevertheless increased the burden on architects' shoulders and the amount of administration required to document all aspects of a project. This article will examine management software tools and their role in reducing this burden.
