Remember, in all this, that we're thinking about 'British' architecture - meaning both architecture as it is built in Britain, and overseas buildings designed by British-based architects. In trying to pin down whether there is such a thing as a British style or approach, let's start with a question: what, and where, was the last truly convincing high-tech masterwork? Was it Foster's Gherkin? Rogers' Barajas air terminal in Madrid? Grimshaw's Southern Cross station in Melbourne? Piano's London Shard, still unbuilt? All, please note, by architects of a certain age. Younger generations -even those who have passed through the design offices of those famous names - don't design buildings like that. The famous names themselves are hedging their bets somewhat, doing other kinds of buildings these days. High-tech has evolved into eco-tech.
