The Danish architect Jorn Utzon, who died on 29 November 2008, will forever be remembered as the man who gave to Sydney, indeed to Australia, its unique symbol of identity. His 90th birthday in April this year was celebrated around the world and marked by the inauguration of an Utzon Centre in Denmark, an exhibition at La Biennale in Venice, and by symposiums in Seville, Aalborg and Palma de Mallorca. These events show that Utzon's work still lives more than 30 years after he handed over the practice to his sons and are indicative of the directions that his legacy might take in the future. For this legacy to unfold, however, it is necessary to go beyond the cliches about his architecture.
