When guests at scarlet, a new ￡gm hotel on the north Cornish coast, get shown around the impressive facilities, they don't only visit the alluring spa with outdoor natural pool and cocoon relaxation pods, they get to see the biomass boiler as well. It's not the sort of thing you'd expect from a luxury hotel but rather surprisingly it's a big hit with visitors, according to development director Simon Baldwin, with plenty of questions from guests thinking of installing one in their own home. And having spent around ￡200,000 on the boiler alone, Scarlet can be forgiven for showing off its investment. For it is attempting a difficult balancing act between luxury experience and sustainable design.
