Between Typology and Typicality: German Swiss Architecture 1980-2000

Late-20th century architecture of German-speaking Switzerland has acquired an international reputation based on formal austerity, material sensitivity, rigorous detailing and contextual observations. It also claims an ethical orientation. Against the post modern culture that predominated in the 1980s, the Swiss sought to recover a sense of stability. Their sensual appraisal of ordinary materials pointed to a revaluation of physical aspects of architecture, while the conceptual dimension was supplementedrnby constructional acumen and precise readings of place and tradition.
