South Bank turns 60

Between now and September 4 is a summer-long celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, bringing architects and artists together in a re-evocation of the original event through new architecture, installations, photographic displays, exhibitions and talks. One highlight will be the hanging of one of the Festival's few surviving murals (right), designed by John Piper and 15m long by 5m high, which will be displayed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall for the duration of the Festival.
