The gentle, elegant and technical article on fire stopping - Hilti fire collars (RIBAJ November 2015) - is a useful reminder of the fire safety value of such small components of a building. Two aspects of the tests described need particular mention. The test described is usually regarded as simple quality control and is therefore an essential test for the manufacturer. The results may have no relationship with the performance of the major component (wall/floor) of which it is part and the fire compartment furnace should reach temperatures of about 1000°C (1273K). Additionally, mention is made of 'a little light smoke' that passes through the fire stopping. However, any smoke and the invisible gases that are products of combustion would be unacceptable if they flowed into a space occupied by people.
