A steady‐state, radial heat flow apparatus for determining the thermal conductivities of sulfide and telluride melts is described. The apparatus was used in the temperature range 650–1000°C and data on silver‐sulfur, silver‐tellurium, and nickel‐sulfur melts were obtained. The discussion emphasizes the experimental problems with vaporization, thermocouple stability, etc. A detailed analysis of possible convective heat transfer effects at Grashof‐Prandtl numbers below 5000 is also presented.
