The authors are developing a new half-toroidal infinitely variable transmission (IVT) that offers higher torque capacity, higher efficiency, and a wider overall ratio range in a more compact device. Major features of this new half-toroidal IVT include a geared-neutral system and a power-split system. We successfully downscaled the current CVT by eliminating conventional launching devices, such as the torque converter, friction clutch, etc., and focused our energies on a geared-neutral system. In this paper, we will focus on the power transmission efficiency of this system, and provide theoretical calculations and experimental results. We will also discuss our concept for achieving higher efficiency.
