The Potential Use of Roselle as a Novel Graft Copolymer

摘要

Methyl acrylate (MA) was graft copolymerized onto Hibiscus sab-dariffa (Roselle) stem fiber and used to explore the additive effect of acrylic acid (AA), vinyl acetate (VA), and 2-vinyl pyridine (2-VP) on percentage grafting and change in the properties, in binary vinyl monomeric mixtures. The graft copolymers were characterized by advanced techniques and evaluated for physico-chemical changes. With increase in percentage grafting, there was an increase in physicochemicothermal resistance, hydrophobicity, and miscibility with organic solvents as a result of morphological transformation in these novel biomaterials. However, cellulose form I remained unchanged. These modified graft copolymer procured from waste biomass can have numerous scientific applications.
