This report assesses the market for packaged, processed nuts, embracing sales through grocery and impulse outlets and though pubs and other catering outlets. The market was valued at f199 mn in 1997, having risen by around 6 per cent since 1993. This represented a decline in real terms. Factors behind the lack of dynamism in the market include vigorous competition from savoury snacks and crisps, the lack of marketing and product innovation in the nuts market and the increasing importance of adult-oriented savoury snacks, with competed directly with nuts.
