The market for bedroom furniture was worth an estimated f1.69 bn in 1997, up 9 per cent on the previous year and 21 per cent on 1993. Sales of bedroom furniture account for around 23 per cent of all consumer expenditure on furniture. Beds and mattresses comprise the largest and fastest growing sector, accounting For 55 per cent of total sales value in 1997. Sales increased by 11 per cent in 1997, reaching f929 mn, as the sector benefited from windfall spending during the latter half of the year. The main growth area is in bedsteads, although divans still form the major of ht market.
