VEGETABLE OILS, PART 1: STANDARD OILS

The market for standard vegetable oils amounted to 134.4 mn litres valued at f100.5 mn in 1997, a decline of 4 per cent by volume and of 7 per cent by value compared with 1996. Between 1993 and 1996 the market had grown quite strongly in volume terms, driven by the continuing trends away form solid fats and animal fats and oils. However, market value suffered as a result of increasing commoditisation of the market, the general reduction in prices and the declining importance of branded products.
