Paul Makin - obituary

After discovering a gap in the retail bookseller's market, Makin worked with a partner to develop a new point of sale system that was adopted by a number of retail chains, including Blackwell's. By the early 80s, several manufacturers were offering DOS-based POS systems, but not the software needed to use them effectively. Makin developed a solution for ICL. When Fujitsu acquired ICL in 1981, Makin was asked to redevelop the solution for a new Fujitsu POS. "They flew a till over from Japan for us, the only one in the UK. When the till was released a few months later, we were the only guys who could provide the software."
