The many faces of multi-family recycling

When it comes to multi-family recycling, the most consistent aspect is its inconsistency. Resource Recycling surveyed eight multi-family recycling programs around the U.S. and Canada this past summer, and results suggest that multi-family recycling programs are all over the map — both in terms of geography and operations. These diverse pieces themselves, however, are indicative of the most common trait among multi-family recycling programs — the need to remain flexible in order to meet the requirements of diverse environments. Generally speaking, once established with a collection infrastructure, the largest problems center on increasing participation, reducing contamination and continuing education.
