Manitobans continue to divert more recyclables from landfill annually, as the province's diversion rate for the 2007-2008 reporting period increased six percent, with 68,809 metric tons of recyclables collected last year for recycling or re-use purposes. According to the Manitoba Product Stewardship Corp.'s 2007/2008 Annual Report, the 68,809 metric tons diverted represents an increase of approximately 4,043 metric tons compared to the previous fiscal year. Over 200 community recycling programs currently participate in the comprehensive, province-wide infrastructure, with the average Manitoban recycling 129.6 pounds for the 2007-2008 reporting period. In regards to commodities, the volume of plastics recovered by the program, including No. 1 PET, No. 2 HDPE and No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7 rigid plastics, increased 11.9 percent over 2007's standing, at 52,004 metric tons, while the volume of paper and paperboard products recycled also increased 5.3 percent over 2007's standing, at 6,027 metric tons.
