Conversion technologies, energy recovery, wet-dry collection, maximum diversion, materials recovery, organics, commercial single stream, zero waste — the buzz words of waste management in the second decade of the new century center around concepts that are both old and new. But there is the understanding that one requirement is common to each of these concepts - the understanding that source-separation initiatives must be combined with some form of waste processing, or waste preparation, to reach our waste diversion goals. What used to be referred to as dirty MRFs are becoming essentialparts of modern integrated waste management systems.
