European Commission proposes steps to boost EU landfill diversion

In March, Eurostat, the official statistical agency of the European Union, released municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and treatment data for the EU-27 and five other European countries for calendar year 2009. Combined, the 32 countries managed their MSW as follows:rn1. Disposal in landfills - 38 percentrn2. Recycling-24 percentrn3. Incineration-20 percentrn4. Composting-18 percentrnWhat may be the most striking about the Eurostat data, however, is that some member states disposed next to nothing in landfills while others still relied heavily on disposal -the option of last resort in the five-step waste hierarchy.
