California sets mercury thermostat regulations

Final regulations on the management and recycling of old mercury thermostats have been released by California.The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) set new regulations for manufacturers to manage and recycle mercury-containing thermostats in the Golden State. The regulatory move follows a 2006 state law banning the sale of mercury-containing thermostats and a 2008 law banning their disposal in landfills. The 2008 law also gave the DTSC regulatory oversight for the management of the thermostats.
