In 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a rule aimed at streamlining the management requirements for recycling used cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and the glass removed from them. Although the rule does require companies wanting to export used CRTs for recycling to notify the EPA 60 days prior to shipment, the notices only include estimates of the amount of material the company intends to ship over a 12-month period. There is also no requirement that they report the quantity of the material that was actually exported during this period.
