California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation forcing beverage companies to use increasingly higher percentages of recycled plastic in coming years, but he signed other bills of consequence. During his first year as governor of the country's most populous state, the Democrat from San Francisco had a number of recycling-related bills land on his desk. Newsom opted to axe much-watched legislation that would have set relatively high targets for recycled plastic in beverage containers. However, he signed into law a bill providing support to the state's container redemption program and another that is tied to recycling market development.
