OC contamination in gasoline is a recently occurring and novel problem for the oil and gas industry. Our study has shown that even low levels of OC, i.e. 10 mg/kg, can lead to elevated levels of steel corrosion. The common factor between all fuels contaminated with OC but still achieving 0% rust rating (ASTM D655A) is the presence of ethanol (E5 fuels) and/or the addition of a nrtulti-component performance additive package that incorporates a corrosion inhibitor (E0 and E5 examples). Both the multi-component performance additive and 100% denatured fuel ethanol used for gasoline blending contain a corrosion inhibitor(s). (Typical corrosion inhibitor concentrations of denatured fuel ethanol; 0-102 mg/kg and typical corrosion inhibitor contribution from multi -function performance additive package; 0-50mg/kg). Even at low treat-rates, corrosion inhibitors form a strongly adsorbed and impervious film at the metal-liquid interface, protecting the metal from corrosion. Typical chemistries of corrosion inhibitors for gasoline and/or anhydrous ethanol for fuel use include; carboxylic acids, carboxylic di-and tri- acids, fatty acids, fatty acid dimers, esters, amines and amine salts. Hence, it is concluded that the presence of the corrosion inhibitor protects against corrosion from organic chloride contamination.
