Delivering sustainable built environments by an integrated approach

Sustainability is a word today that pervades architecture and building engineering whether planning, designing or managing a building or city [1]. Rapid urbanization in China has resulted in great demands for energy, resources and pressure on the environment. A conceptual systemic framework for a research strategy focussing on the sustainable built environment is proposed to encourage collaborative work among professionals including urban planners, architects, building scientists, engineers, facilities managers, performance assessors and policy makers [2]. The Sixth International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE), held on 25th-28th October 2013, provided a high-level international academic exchange platform for experts and scholars, deepened international collaboration and promoted the implementation of building and environmental sustainability, and in particular promoted the integrated approach in delivering the sustainable building and environment in China.
