The initial design of a wind farm can have profound implications for its future profitability. Based on onshore wind farms, though also relevant for offshore, this extract from a new EWEA book reveals some of the key considerations.Once a site has been identified and a decision taken to invest in its development, the wind farm design process begins. The fundamental aim is to maximize energy production, minimize capital and operating costs, and stay within the constraints imposed by the site. As the constraints and costs are all subject to some level of uncertainty, the optimization process also seeks to minimize risk.
