Subcontracting and Supplier Innovativeness in a Developing Economy: Evidence from China's Information and Communication Technology Industry

This study critically evaluates the relevance of the global value chains theory against the actual practices of subcontracting and technological innovation in China based on a large-scale empirical firm survey in the information and communication technology industry. The results suggest that the impact of sub-contracting depends on local suppliers' absorptive capabilities; that the impact of global value chains on local technology upgrading is not linear; and an overdependence on subcontracting for the global market could hurt technological innovation.%In dieser Studie wird die Relevanz der Theorie der globalen Wertschöpfungsketten vor dem Hintergrund der tatsächlichen Prak-tiken der Untervergabe von Aufträgen und der technischen Innovation in China mit Hilfe einer umfängreichen empirischen Erhe-bung unter Firmen in der Branche der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik kritisch bewertet. Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, dass die Auswirkung einer Untervergabe von Aufträgen von der absorptiven Kapazität der Zulieferer vor Ort abhängt, dass die Auswirkung der globalen Wertschöpfungsketten auf die Verbesserung der Technik vor Ort nicht linear verläuft und dass eine zu starke Abhängigkeit von einer Untervergabe von Aufträgen für den globalen Markt der technischen Innovation ichaden könnte.
