In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in needlecraft generally and, noticeably, knitting in particular. The reasons for this sudden and renewed interest are not entirely clear but I know from my own personal experience that I derive a great satisfaction from all forms of needlecraft. This may be in the form of clothing that I have sewn or knitted, tapestry, embroidery or even cross stitch accessories for the home and gifts for others. It is perhaps the ability to create something unique in a world that is driven evermore by consumerism and materialism that encourages many people to harbour a desire to return to the values and skills of the past. One of these skills was needlecraft and I am certain that there are many readers with an interest in its many aspects. There interest could be in applique, crochet, embroidery, knitting, patchwork, quilting or sewing - all of which are included in this Encyclopaedia. It is also equally likely that those with an interest in these crafts range in ability from complete beginners to advanced and highly skilled practitioners.
