摘要

On the occasion of 90 years of the existence of the National Ukrainian Academy of Science, one of its constituent Institutes, "The Institute of Materials Science Problems," published this monumental encyclopaedia. One of the editors is Academician V.V. Skorokhod, who has been the Director of the Institute since 2002. The Institute began its existence in 1952, when after the WW II there was a dire need for indigenous special alloys. The present name of the Institute was coined in the year 1964, prior to that it was known as the Institute of Powder Metallurgy and Special Alloys' since 1954. Before that for two years 1952-54, the independent laboratory on 'Special Alloys' was carved out of the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the Ukrainian Academy of Science. It is significant to highlight that the founding Director of the Institute, Academician I.N. Frantsevich, from the very beginning, realised the close relation between powder metallurgy processing and the development of new materials, metallic as well as non-metallic. It was due to his vision that the Institute is presently world famous. The Institute also publishes an internationally reputed monthly journal 'Powder Metallurgy' in Russian, which is regularly translated into English. Presently, the Institute has 4 academicians, 8 corresponding members of the academy, and 80 senior scientists with doctorate degrees; in all, the strength of the Institute is 1500 persons [1].
