How different the books in this series are! This reviewer recently reviewed Peter Lock's The Routledge Companion to the Crusades (RR 2007/ 401) and was quite struck by the differences in approach in these two books. Whereas, in The Routledge Companion to the Crusades, there is quite a strong emphasis on narrative, text, "the story" and how it has been presented by historians, The Routledge Companion to Britain in the Eighteenth Century 1688-1820 has a very different focus. It is primarily a book of facts with little interpretive content. The facts (names, dates, places, statistics) are usefully arranged into lists, charts, figures and chronologies under headings such as political chronologies, the monarchy, ministries and officeholders, parliament, elections and parliamentary reform, foreign affairs and empire, military and naval, law and order, religion, financial and economic and social and cultural. This is an excellent source for finding that nugget of information that you need and that has thus far eluded you. (Who held the post of Lord President of the Council during the Chatham administration? What was the main centre in Britain for Jesuit refugees, driven from the Continent by the French Revolution?
