In Mexico, Amado Ramirez, a correspondent for the broadcast station Televisa and host of the daily news programme Al Tanto on local Radiorama, was shot dead near a city main square. In Iraq, several gunmen attempted to abduct Mohan Hussein al-Dhahir, managing editor of the Baghdad daily Al-Mashraq, and after a struggle, shot him six times in the back and once in the head. In China, unidentified men at an illegal coal mine beat reporter Lan Chengzhang to death. The year 2007 was the deadliest for the press in more than a decade: 65 journalists were killed in direct connection to their work and another 23 deaths are still being investigated to determine whether they were work related. Another 127 journalists were imprisoned as of 12 December 2007.
