Those of us who have been active in the revolutionary sector of the working-class movement are well acquainted with David Cope, formerly of Central Books and now of Left on the Shelf in Kendal, Cumbria. Books in their every manifestation and the story of the Communist Party of Great Britain are David Cope's expertise, and passion. His CPGB Bibliography (to which I was a modest but enthusiastic contributor of bibliographical data for Wales) aims to be a complete record of the publications of and about the Communist Party of Great Britain from its foundation in 1920 to its ignominious demise in 1991, and since. This is an exceptionally ambitious project, fraught by immense difficulties, born in a large measure from the very nature of revolutionary activism and agitation. In his history of the Party Klugmann (1968) appealed for documents of all descriptions relevant to the early years. He reminisced: "It was very hard in the stormy years of the 20's for those involved in the struggle to maintain records and personal libraries. Police raids took most of the early archives.
