James Ciment and John Radzilowski, editors of American Immigration: An Encyclopedia of Political, Social and Cultural Change, have released their second edition with impeccable timing. Not only did they incorporate the results of the 2010 census but the USA is once again in the midst of an immigration upheaval. The status of immigrants, especially those of the illegal nature, is being reconsidered and reevaluated by the US Government and its citizens. This four-volume set is an exhaustive compendium of information about immigration in America (and by America, the editors mean the USA except in the pre-1776 sections). James Ciment writes in the introduction that this encyclopedia "provides a comprehensive and balanced exploration of what are arguably the most important subjects in the history and life of the American people: where we came from, why we came here and what we created once we did". In four volumes separated into six parts, Ciment and Radzilowski do just that. They cover the where, why and what with the help of 125 contributing experts, each authoring individual sections that provide in-depth and balanced information. At the conclusion of each section are a list of related topics and a recommended reading list for anyone wanting more information.
