As the title (and the dust-jacket photograph of a dozen serried rows of bishops) makes clear, this volume is about the worldwide Anglican Communion, and the greater part of it (pp. 135-552) is devoted to its 44 provinces. The British Empire left in its wake various bequests to its former colonies in varying degrees - the English language, parliamentary democracy, cricket [. . .] and also the Anglican church (among other denominations). The 36 chapters of Part Ⅲ which deal with the provinces outside the British Isles mainly cover the churches in the countries of the former empire, not forgetting the Episcopal Church in the USA, but - rather as Mozambique and Rwanda have joined the Commonwealth - there are some surprises. Thus, we have Anglican churches in Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo; in Japan, Korea and the Philippines; in Portugal and Spain, Mexico and Cuba, Brazil and the 'Southern Cone' of South America.
