In the past, I've written entire columns and series of columns on strategies for dealing with insurance companies and how independent contractors can battle the ever-increasing costs associated with insurance. Recently, the topic of insurance came up again, and I thought I could add a few more suggestions and tips to the mix. At our recent Plumbers' Success International Summit in Houston, several insurance representatives came to present some insurance basics to the PSI members. They introduced some dynamic new programs that our members could use to lower their costs and protect their businesses in the future. One of the topics they brought up really hit home for me. It was succession planning and exit strategies. Several years ago, I'd never thought about succession planning for my business. After all, who wants to occupy their thoughts with their own mortality? There's a certain morbidity to it.
