Base Realignment and Closure and Enhanced Use Leasing

The latest Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round-BRAC 2005-has the Department of Defense (DOD) engaged in an extensive effort to align installations and facilities to meet strategic requirements. BRAC 2005 was driven by goals that include modernizing the force structure and incorporating emerging weapon technologies, but a range of cost economies from co-location are also expected. In their final form, BRAC 2005 cost economy objectives include a five percent reduction in the Department's overall real estate replacement value, the vacating of nearly $12 million square feet of leased space, and the relocation of operations to facilities with improved functional alignment and security.
