Government Land Acquisition in India: Changes After 120 Years

India's first Land Acquisition Act was implemented in 1894. Formulated during the British Raj, the Act allows the government to forcibly acquire land (use of what is called eminent domain power in the US) from private landholders for projects of public purpose. Quite often government entities are accused of acquiring land for private firms leading to protests and agitation all over the country over displacement and compensation.
