Virgin West Coast Franchise Extension

THE DEPARTMENT for Transport has issued an extension of up to one year to the Virgin Rail Group for the West Coast rail franchise, a joint venture by Virgin and Stagecoach that was due to end in March. Eventually the existing deal will be succeeded by the West Coast Partnership franchise, which will oversee both classic services on the current route and the transition to, and running of, the initial high-speed services on HS2's Phase One.
