The DBS stored pool allocations were amended in mid-January. The pool code WNWX is back in use for locomotives stored but on heavy repair or candidates for heavy repair whilst everything that was allocated to the WNXX pool has been reallocated to one of the other storage pools, mostly to WNTS. Many people question why DBS stores locos for a few days only to then return them to traffic. While the company will not officially comment on this policy, other than to stay its fleet is 'organic' and locos move between pools to suit business requirements, it is understood the reason is to keep the availability figures high and is a legacy of the Keith Heller era. If the fleet comprises 250 Class 66s, and 50 are stopped for maintenance that represents an 80% availability. However, if 45 of those locos are 'stored' for their repairs then the 'active fleet' comprises 205 locos, with 5 stopped for repairs, so availability is 97.5%.
