The 842 'Black 5s' produced for the LMS were, arguably, the most versatile and liked, especially by enginemen, of all locomotives. Built by several manufacturers, they had numerous differences in fittings, frames, boilers, liveries and valve gear. This epic series has reached volume 3 covering the batch 45225 to 45471. This series' particular strength is the staggering amount of researched data. The effort which must have gone into producing this and previous volumes is nothing short of staggering and amounts to the most comprehensively detailed history of the highly admired 'Black 5' yet published.
