NRM in closure threat

The National Railway Museum in York, or its sister site at Shildon, is threatened with possible closure, due to government spending cuts. The current government Spending Review means that the Science Museums Group - which as well as its London HQ museum runs the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York and Bradford's National Media Museum - is facing a massive deficit. As well as big cuts to the Science Museum in London, the Science Museum Group's Director Ian Blatchford says that one of its sites in Manchester, York or Bradford could close its doors. He says the prospect of a further 10% extra cut in funding meant almost certainly that one of the museums would have to go.
