The great Northern Railway New Erecting Shop, Plant Works, Hexthorpe Road, Doncaster, has been granted a Grade Ⅱ listing by English Heritage. The body has also designated two bridges on the Leeds-Selby line, scheduled for electrification, as Grade II to protect them during the works. The Plant Works New Erecting Shop was built in 1890-1, to increase site capacity and accommodate the ever-larger locomotives being built. It had two large erecting bays with overhead cranes separated by a narrower central bay housing machinery and equipment. It had a total capacity of 20 steam engines. The shop where Gresley's A3 and A4 Pacifies were built is still in use today, as the remaining operational part of the works.
